WEBSITES

Keep on top of Red Deer's CLUCK scene, ask questions and get to know some of the faces and names by visiting and joining our Facebook Group.

A fabulous place to start poking around and learning about back yard hens is at Back Yard Chickens.com. They have information on breeds (productivity, appearance, personality, &c), choosing a coop, building your own coop, nutrition, pests & diseases and so much more. There are also forums on many topics.

My Pet Chicken has a Breed Selector Tool that can help you decide what type of chicken would best suit your needs as a coop-keeper. Things to keep in mind: expected egg production, friendliness (temperament), confinement (will your girls range or stay in a run or a coop), size (bantam vs large breed), broodiness, the list goes on!

Fresh Eggs Daily is a blog full of tips and facts about keeping chickens.

BOOKS

Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens -I have this book and it.is.fantastic. It's a bit more than I think the average Urban Chicken-Keeper is going to need (with info on breeding and showing), but it is considered the authority on chicken-keeping. It has great information about breeds (though it didn't answer ALL of my questions) and building a coop.
